Japanese Yukata – Tsukikage ya
Natsuki Shigeta, shop owner and designer, told us,
“I decided to make yukata around 14 or 15 years ago,
and I chose not to manufacture them in colors other than
white or navy-blue from the beginning.
I didn”t think even once to use other colors,
for I myself like white and navy blue.
Summer in Japan is clearly very hot and I believe that having that breathless look under the blazing sun is just not fashionable.
Among all the colors, white and blue appear definitely fresher.”
First of all, Natsuki put all herself in the creations of patterns, and after that, she entrust all the material to an expert of traditional handicraft.
As in accordance with the Ise-Katagami (Ise Paper Pattern) tradition, this master artisan will create a perfectly accurate stencil with a cutter-like tool.
Even if yukata is a typical summer thing, She said we can just put it on even in winter. Wearing it only in summer is pretty much a waste; one can use it indoor, and also outdoor during autumn if combined with other clothes.
By doing so, one would introduce yukata as a fashionable item. That will be fun!
